Common problems that are encountered by testers
If the page remains on loading the plug-in and does not go beyond that, please disable the firewall (Norton Internet Security, Privacy and Firewall for Zone Alarm) and/or any popup blockers. See solution #2 below.
If the download process repeats two or more times, or if you receive an error message during loading, please click on "Start", "Control Panel" ("Settings" if your OS is prior to XP), then click on "Add/Remove Programs", and check to see if you have "Java 2 Runtime Environment" in the programs listed (To remove/uninstall, simply click on the item, then click "Remove"). If any version other than 1.4.1_07 is listed, please remove it before installing 1.4.1_07. See solution #3 below.
Solution #1. How to Add ALEKS to Norton Trusted Sites
Using ‘Norton Protection Center’, please follow below:
- Find the "Norton Protection Center" icon in the bottom right corner of your screen (located to the left of your system time clock).
- Right-click on the Norton icon and choose "Open Norton Protection Center."
- Next, choose "Open Norton Internet Security" and click "Privacy Control." This will be located on the main Norton screen.
- Click the "Configure" button in the lower right corner.
- In the "Privacy Control" window, click the "Advanced"
button located on the lower right corner.
- In the "Advanced" dialog, click the "Add Site" button in the lower
left corner of the "Web Content Options" tab.
- Type aleks.com in the "New Site/Domain" dialog box, then click the
"OK" button.
- Select "*www.aleks.com*" in the list of domain names in the left pane. Once selected, choose the "User Settings" tab located at the top right.
- Under "Pop-up ad," uncheck "Use Ad Blocking settings," and select "Permit."
- Click "OK" to save your changes and close this window. Click "OK" again to save changes under the "Privacy Control" window.
Close Norton Internet Security. Open a new browser window and try to log into ALEKS.
Using ‘Norton Internet Security’, please follow below:

Close Norton Internet Security. Open a new browser window and try to log into ALEKS.
Solution #2. How to Disable Norton for ALEKS plug-in to Load
- Using ‘Norton Protection Center’, please follow below:
Open Norton Protection Center go to first option and disable all features.
- Close Norton screen and open new browser window.
- Once new browser window is open, login into ALEKS.
- Once logged in, you may enable all features.
Using ‘Norton Internet Security’, please follow below:
- Find the "Norton Internet Security" icon in the bottom right corner of your screen (located to the left of your system time clock).
- Right-click on the Norton icon and choose "Disable Norton Internet Security”.
- Once Norton is disabled, open new browser window and try to log into your account.
- Once logged in, you may follow steps 1 and 2 to “Enable Norton Internet Security”.
Solution #3. How to Download the Necessary JAVA Version For Your Computer
Sun Microsystems' Java VM is available free from
http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.1_07/index.html
Simply select the JRE link "Windows (U.S. English only)" download located under "Download J2SE v 1.4.1_07" (or 1.4.1_08 and so on, but not 1.4.2_*) and follow the instructions for installation and download. Once it is installed, you will need to enable Java.
To enable Java follow these steps:
- Click on Tools;
- Click on Internet Options;
- Click on the Advanced tab;
- Scroll down about halfway you should see Java (Sun);
- Make sure that the box is checked;
- Close the browser.
- Restart your computer and then retry ALEKS.
If you do not see the Java (Sun) available under the advanced tab, please make sure you did NOT download "J2SE v 1.4.1_* with Sun ONE Studio 4 update 1" instead.
