Language Core Concentration

Every student who does not fulfill the requirements for two majors, is required to have a Core Concentration.  Essentially, this Core Concentration is a sequence of 5-courses in a second field of study, at the college level.

These courses must all be of the same discipline and the discipline must be housed in the Feinstein College of Arts and Sciences.  Thus, a student may major in Marketing and have a Core Concentration in History, but a student majoring in History cannot have a Core Concentration in Marketing.

The Core Concentration in languages is very popular at RWU because it does not follow the exact same requirements as other Core Concentrations.  As mentioned above, this requirement typically includes five courses.  However, if a student scores well on the placement examination, he or she may be waived out of up to six credits (two courses) required for graduation.

While a Core Concentration is often five courses, for a student with a strong knowledge of a language, a language Core Concentration would only be three courses.

While still in college, the advantage of earning a Core Concentration in fewer than five courses is that students have more flexibility in their course schedules and can take additional electives in their majors.

There are many post-graduation advantages to earning a Core Concentration in a language also.  With all forms of business becoming more international, employers are often looking for candidates who can successfully conduct business with people around the world.  Additionally, more and more workplaces in our country have a bilingual culture.
