William Palm joined Roger Williams University in August 2011 after completing his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at MIT. Prior to graduate school, he worked for six years as a product design engineer and consultant, performing concept development, mechanical design, and engineering analysis for a wide range of consumer, medical, and industrial products. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a named inventor on eight patents.
Dr. Palm’s research focuses on the management of innovation, specifically, how companies coordinate product development projects in which design is divided across corporate boundaries. A second stream of research examines engineering education, including how first-year programs influence engineering student performance and retention.
At Roger Williams University, he has taught ENGR 110 – Engineering Graphics and Design, ENGR 115 – Computer Applications for Engineering, ENGR 332 – Machine Design, ENGR 430 – Manufacturing and Assembly, ENGR 442 – Biomechanics, and ENGR 490/492 – Engineering Design I & II (capstone sequence).
