This Personal Fitness Trainer Certificate program is designed to introduce the participant to the essential educational topics needed for national certification as a Personal Fitness Trainer. In addition, career opportunities will be reviewed for those seeking to start a career in the health and fitness industry that has shown continued growth, according to the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook which states that employment for Personal Fitness Trainers will continue to grow (see www.bls.org).
The student will be introduced to the theoretical and practical concepts of Personal Fitness Training as they are prepared to develop safe fitness programs through appropriate exercise assessment and individualized exercise prescription. Students completing this program will be prepared to take a national Personal Fitness Trainer certification exams for the National Strength & Conditioning Association or the American College of Sports Medicine. Depending on a student’s career goals, one of these may be more applicable; something that will be discussed during the program. Students will also earn a certificate from RWU for “Personal Health and Fitness Training”.
This course is an active course and requires all students to participate in each lab session. In addition, each student will have to demonstrate proficiency in the administration of assessments and teaching of exercises.
Instruction in this course will utilize online modules, onsite lectures, skills practices, small group sessions, and discussions. Various videos and computer presentations will be used to enhance visual and informative learning experiences. Both oral and written quizzes will be utilized, as will demonstrations and lab experiences and assignments.
