Andrew Cohen received his B.Arch. from Cornell University and his M.Arch. from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. After leaving school he worked in Cambridge and Boston for a number of prominent firms, including Cambridge Seven Associates, and Benjamin Thompson Associates, and for two years in cartographic and computer graphics development, advertising and graphic design. He opened his own firm for private practice in Architecture in 1982.

Cohen pursues a simultaneous interest in architectural education and practice, having practiced architecture concurrently with his teaching for over thirty years. He first taught at the Boston Architectural Center from 1975-1980, and has been a Professor of Architecture at Roger Williams University, Bristol, RI since 1983. He coordinates the thesis programs, teaches courses in housing, theory-based design studios, and a general introduction to architecture for first year students. During the 90s Cohen co-directed the School’s study abroad program based in Vienna, Austria, and Prague and Brno, Czech Republic, in cooperation with Czech Technical University in Prague, and the VUT Brno.

His firm, Andrew Cohen Architects, has and continues to employ many RWU SAAHP graduates, and has won several awards for work built throughout the greater Boston Area, including 1991/1996 Salem, MA Historical Commission Preservation Awards, 2005/2006/2007/2008 Finalist awards for the Harleston Parker Medal of the Boston Society of Architects, a 2005 Boston Society of Architects Honor Award, a 2005 AGC Massachusetts Build New England Award, and a 2004 AIA New England Citation for Design Excellence for the Springstep Center. He has lectured and /or been an invited Juror at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Tulane, Carnegie-Mellon U., The University of Virginia, MIT, Temple U., Wentworth Institute of Technology, and VUT Brno, CZ.

Andrew Cohen served on the Board of Trustees at the Berklee College of music from 2003-2006 and continues to serve on the Campus Facilities Planning Committee. He is a member of the AIA, BSA, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Society of Architectural Historians, and the US Green Buildings Council. In additions to his obsession with architecture and the built environment, Andrew Cohen is an avid skier, plays squash and tennis, and is actively involved in the support of the wider arts community, including jazz and classical music, cinema and the theater.
