The AIA Rhode Island (AIAri) Window on Architecture is a storefront space located on the ground floor of Roger Williams University’s Downcity Providence site. Created through a collaboration between the American Institute of Architects and 18 corporate sponsors, including Roger Williams University, who spearheaded the project, donated the space and manages its operations, The Window serves as a meeting place for those involved in architecture and architecture education in the region. Continuing education sessions, board meetings, exhibitions (including the monthly Providence Gallery Night) along with meetings and workshops involving architecture faculty and students with those in the building industry, are regularly hosted there. The space is also the site of an annual RWU-RISD joint Gallery Night Architecture Student Work exhibition each June, with RWU’s work curated by RWU architecture students.

The Window opened in February 2007, following a design and fundraising effort involving a team of RWU and AIAri leaders including Dean Stephen White, AIA; Mark Saccoccio, AIA of Saccoccio Associates; Michael Abbot, AIA of Newport Collaborative Architects; Greg Spiess, AIA of Edwards and Kelcey and 2003 RWU Alum Kyle Bamrick, AIA. Over $100,000 was raised in three months for construction materials, labor and furnishings to renovate and complete the space. The Window received a 2010 AIA National Grassroots Honorable Mention not only for its transformation of the chapter’s services, but also in recognition of the inspired collaboration between the profession, corporate sponsors and the University.

The AIA RI Window on Architecture is one of three AIA chapter headquarters to be established at an educational institution in the United States —the others being at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln and the University of Nevada/Las Vegas. AIA RI Window is the only such space in an urban setting.
