The Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition

The Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition offers courses in the history, theory, and practice of Writing.   Currently, students may pursue a Core Concentration in Writing Studies or take one or more of the advanced Writing courses as electives.   Students should consult with their advisors before selecting electives.

Core Concentration in Writing Studies

Prerequisites: Critical Writing ( WTNG 200 or WTNG 210 or WTNG 220)

At least two (2) courses at the 200 level.  6 credits

Options
In addition to the Critical Writing course that is required, students may also take another Critical Writing course (WTNG 200, 210 or 220) as one of these 200 level courses. One of these courses must be at the 230 level or above.

WTNG 240 – Rhetoric of Film: Writing about Film
WTNG 250 – Advanced Composition
WTNG 299 – Special Topics in Writing
At least three (3) courses at the 300 or 400 level or above.  9 credits from the following list:
WTNG 300 – Rhetoric and Cultural Differences
WTNG 302 – Art of Writing: Forms of the Essay
WTNG 310 – Advanced Writing (Sciences)
WTNG 320 – Writing for Business Organizations
WTNG 400 – Writing for Social Change
WTNG 402 – Advanced Argument
WTNG 430 – Special Topics
WTNG 450 – Composition Theory________________
WTNG 460 – Writing Studies Internship 

University Writing Program

Program  Mission
The University Writing Program, offered by the Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition, creates the intellectual atmosphere in which students can acquire rhetorical knowledge and strategies to write purposefully, incisively, and ethically.  Students and faculty in the Program read closely and critically, explore rhetorical situations and cultural contexts, engage in inquiry, and study the elements of well-reasoned, persuasive discourse.

The University Core Curriculum writing requirement is fulfilled by completing the following with a grade of C- or higher:

WTNG 102: Expository Writing and one of the following:

  • WTNG  200: Critical Writing for the Humanities and the Social Sciences
  • WTNG 210: Critical Writing for the Sciences
  • WTNG 220: Critical Writing for the Professions

Incoming first year students who need additional support gaining academic literacy may be required to complete WTNG 100 : Introduction to Academic Writing, with a grade of C- or higher.
