Studies in Historic Preservation allow students to acquire a strong background in history, architectural styles, research methods and techniques, and preservation philosophy. Programs emphasize the application of materials conservation and preservation planning theory to practical, field-based preservation problems. All students gain professional experience and hands-on training through required internships and group projects. Students also spend a semester in recommended Study Abroad. The Historic Preservation major provides study in all the areas of academic preparation contained in the “Standards for Undergraduate Programs” adopted by the National Council for Preservation Education.
Degree Requirements
Historic Preservation majors must successfully complete all University Core Curriculum requirements, required coursework in the major, and sufficient electives to total a minimum of 120 credits.
Major requirements in Historic Preservation are divided into three program areas: foundation courses, building styles and technology, and field training and professional practice. Two foundation courses in United States history are taken through the Feinstein College of Arts and Sciences.
