Course Description
This three week summer program will outline the architecture and urbanism of the Netherlands by exploring the extraordinarily rich legacy of Dutch modernism from 1900 to the present. The various trajectories of this legacy will be examined in terms of the urban scenarios of intervention within and expansion ot the historic city, post war reconstruction, and contemporary suburbanization + globalization.
Program Description
Amsterdam and Rotterdam will be this program's focus, but numerous day trips will use these cities as a point of departure.
Amsterdam, with its concentric canal system and characteristic brick buildings, offers a unique model of a city whose architectural and urban developments have occurred with remarkable continuity over the course of its 700 year history.
In contrast, the city of Rotterdam bears witness to the destruction of World War II. Heavily bombed in the 1940's, its entire city center has been a tabula rasa for the architectural and urban experiments of post war reconstruction. Currently, Rotterdam enjoys an international prominence as a contemporary epicenter of architectural discourse and practice.
The Program's base will be in Amsterdam for the entire 3 weeks.
