Program Description

The use of propaganda as a tool for mass persuasion is one the major developments defining the 20th century. This program studies the role propaganda played in Hitler's Germany prior and during World War II. We will explore the effects this propaganda had on the country, individuals and the world through first hand accounts.

Course Description

To examine the propaganda methodology utilized during the period of the Third Reich we will travel to the “Eagle Nest” where Hitler and his Minister of Propaganda planned and executed many of the techniques best known today. We will stand in the very bunkers where high ranking members of the Nazi party lived and worked. We will visit Nuremburg, where Triumph of the Will (considered one of the best movies ever for the way it was shot) was made, as well as travel to other places important in the history of this period. Throughout our travels we will be discussing various types of propaganda, and become literate in why and how these methods work and how widespread it remains in the field of advertising, public relations, and political and government communication.

The course will be covered by interactive lectures, group discussions, video presentations, supplemental material, tours, reading and papers.
